ST PAUL, MN -- The Thunder announced today the signing of two Minnesota natives, forwards Geoffrey Myers and Dan O’Brien. Both players have signed three-year contracts, pending USSF approval.

Myers joins the Thunder as only the second player in Minnesota soccer history to be named Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year twice while in high school. The only other player to reach such honors is Thunder president Manny Lagos.

Myers joins list of numerous Liberian Thunder players (Jeremy Olson)The explosive forward scored 70 goals throughout his three years at Armstrong High School and added 27 assists. Myers only attended his sophomore through senior year at high school in Minnesota as the Liberian born forward moved to the United States at the age of 16. This past year Myers led the Minnesota TwinStars with 14 goals and five assists.

“Geoffrey Myers is an explosive forward that is comfortable with his back to goal and also likes to get behind the opposing team’s defense,” said Thunder head coach Donny Gramenz. “Geoffrey has been training with the team since November and has made tremendous strides with his fitness, work rate and tactical understanding. I am looking forward to his professional debut.”

O’Brien joins the Thunder for his second season in 2009. The Shoreview, Minnesota native didn’t see any time in league matches last year, however did make an appearance in a US Open Cup match. Coach Gramenz is expecting O’Brien to make more of an impact in 2009.

“Dan O’Brien is another Minnesota player that has a tremendous amount of talent and potential. I believe Dan has the ability to play centrally and wide as a midfielder,” said Gramenz. “He really worked hard this offseason, improved his tactical understanding, learned what it takes to be a professional and is hungry to make an impact in his second year with Thunder.”
