MONTREAL, QC -- The Montreal Impact announced that its Most Valuable Player in 2008, goalkeeper Matt Jordan, signed a new deal for the next two seasons, pending the league’s approval.
"My family and I are happy to be returning to Montreal," said Matt Jordan. "This is a decision that we have put a lot of thought into. I feel very good about the team we have in place and the coaching staff’s vision for the future. I firmly believe that Montreal has the potential to be one of the best soccer markets in North America. I know the Impact is committed to doing things the right way as we move forward. In saying that, we all know that we have a lot of hard work ahead of us and we look forward to the challenges."
Jordan, a 33-year-old American, played the last two seasons with the Impact, after playing eight seasons in the Major League Soccer (MLS). In 2008, he received the Giuseppe-Saputo Trophy, after finishing the season first in the USL First Division with an average of 0.760. In 25 regular season games, he recorded 10 wins and nine shutouts, while being the most active Impact player during the season with 2,250 minutes of play. He was also finalist for the Goalkeeper of the Year title in the league and was named to the second all-star team of the USL-1.
Besides the regular season he received the Most Valuable Player honour in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, after conceding only two goals in four games. Then in seven games played during the CONCACAF Champions League, he only conceded three goals and recorded four shutouts.
After only two seasons in Montreal, Jordan is already third among goalkeepers in club history with 20 shutouts and is fourth with 20 wins.
“It was crucial for us to have Matt back with the team,” said Impact technical director Nick De Santis. “He played a major role in our successes in the last season, notably in the CONCACAF Champions League. He is an outstanding athlete who is showing today his loyalty to the Impact by accepting to stay in Montreal, despite receiving offers from MLS teams. He is an important piece of our team.”
The Impact will kick off the 16th training camp in team history, Monday January 5, at Catalogna Soccerplexe, in Lachine. To purchase 2009 season tickets, contact the Montreal Impact at 514-328-3668 or visit us at www.impactmontreal.com .
