Vancouver, Portland advance to Canterbury final
Whitecaps need overtime to beat Abbortsford Rangers

The Whitecaps F.C. Men's Team advanced to the Final of the Canterbury Cup with a 2-1 sudden-death overtime win over the host Abbotsford Rangers of the PDL. Midfielder Steve Kindel netted the winner in the 104th minute. The Whitecaps play A-League rivals the Portland Timbers in Sunday's Final at 7:30pm, preceded by the Whitecaps Women against the Okanagan Predators of the PCSL at 5:00pm. In Saturday's earlier semi-final, Portland defeated the Yakima Reds of the PDL 5-1. Yakima and Abbotsford play at noon.

Vancouver downs Portland in penalty kicks

The Whitecaps F.C. Men's Team won the Canterbury Cup for the first time in three tries, defeating the Portland Timbers 4-2 on penalty kicks after the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Goalkeeper Mike Franks was the hero in the penalty kicks, stopping two of Portland's four attempts, while Tiarnan King netted the winner as the Whitecaps scored on all four of their kicks.

Canterbury Cup
The Canterbury Cup is a mini preseason tournament that features clubs from the Pacific Northwest in both the US and Canada. The 2003 edition will feature a unique A-League versus PDL four-team format where the A-League's Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers take on the PDL's Abbotsford Rangers and Yakima Reds, respectively, with the winning and losing teams facing one another the following day in a tripleheader that will include the Vancouver Whitecaps Women in an exhibition match. The two-day event will be hosted by the Abottsford Rangers.
