TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced Monday its USL First and Second Division Teams of the Week for the 10th week of the season, honoring Cam Weaver of Seattle and Richmond’s Robert Ssejjemba as the USL First and Second Division Players of the Week, respectively.
After catching Romario for the league lead in goals last week in their head-to-head meeting, rookie Cam Weaver watched the Brazilian legend score three en route to Miami’s 5-3 victory. While the former World Cup MVP was idle this week, Weaver made up the difference while leading Seattle to four key road points.
Weaver rescued the Sounders Thursday from a five-game losing skid in their sixth of seven straight road fixtures. He moved within two of Romario for the league lead in scoring with his seventh of the campaign in the 90th minute, spoiling Matt Nelson’s bid at a seventh shutout for Virginia Beach in the 1-0 win.
He erased the rest of the gap between himself and Romario atop the scoring table with his eighth and ninth goals of the season Saturday to give the Sounders a surprising 2-0 lead on the road 27 minutes in at Minnesota. Jordan Harvey, on loan from the Colorado Rapids, set up both strikes in the 15th and 27th only to see Minnesota defender Dustin Branan cut the lead in half two minutes after on an assist from Kiki Lara, who added the equalizer in the 38th.
The Richmond Kickers continue to dominate at 8-1-2, picking up a pair of road wins on the week 4-2 at New Hampshire and 2-0 at Western Mass with Robert Ssejjemba moving his league-leading goal total to nine with three.
Ssejjemba opened the scoring in at New Hampshire Saturday in the 22nd minute and after the Phantoms erased a 2-0 deficit he added the game-winner in the 56th.
The following night he came off the bench in the second half of a 1-0 match and put the game out of reach for the 2005 finalist Western Mass Pioneers with a tally three minutes from time.
