WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads took a 2-1 victory against the Phoenix FC Wolves, earning a split of the season series, in front of 2,752 fans at a sunny Legion Stadium on Saturday night. Jamel Wallace and Daniel Roberts each scored for the Hammerheads, who broke a two-game losing streak in league play with the win.
Wallace got the Hammerheads on the board quickly with his third goal of the season. The central defender was able to get on the end of a long throw-in from defender Uriah Bentick, and send it into the corner of the net in the sixth minute, past Phoenix goalkeeper Andrew Weber.
Phoenix had a chance of their own three minutes later as Diego Faria hit a good shot from 25 yards out that was turned aside by Hammerheads goalkeeper Phillip Tuttle. The Wolves would find an equalizer four minutes before halftime, though, as forward Donny Toia surged past the Hammerheads defense before shooting low past an advancing Tuttle to tie up the score.
Wilmington would regain the lead four minutes later, just before the halftime qhistle, as Roberts scored his first goal for the club. The former UNC-Wilmington standout was able to control possession and sneak a shot home, giving the Hammerheads a halftime lead.
The second half of the game was less fluid than the first, with the referee issuing six yellow cards as the game got chippy. Phoenix had three opportunities to tie the game, but the Hammerheads were able to withstand each of them, and held on to earn their third win of the season.
Next week the Hammerheads will travel to Pennsylvania to take on the Harrisburg City Islanders on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Skyline Sports Complex. Watch the live stream broadcast via UNATION at Buffalo Wild Wings on Old Eastwood Road in Wilmington.
