Battery Set To Welcome Dutch Lions
Aiming to maintain momentum as they prepare for playoffs

Charleston Battery News Release -- www.charlestonbattery.com

Friday, August 17, 2012

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery face the Dayton Dutch Lions in their final match of the USL PRO regular season on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6 p.m. with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. The Battery (12-10-1) enter the game in third place in the USL PRO standings and has secured a berth in the postseason, but depending on the weekend results could finish as high as second or as low as sixth. Dayton (4-10-8) has already been eliminated from playoff contention.

Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on 1340 AM, and there will be 30-minute post-game show featuring Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser.

The top six teams in USL PRO advance to the postseason, with the top two teams receiving a bye into the semifinal round on the weekend of August 31 to September 2. Charleston is currently one point behind the second-placed Rochester Rhinos; both teams have one game to play, but both could be overtaken for second by the Richmond Kickers, who play twice against Antigua Barracuda FC on Friday and Sunday night. The third- and fourth-seeded teams will host quarterfinal matches on the weekend of August 24-26.

The Battery defeated the Rochester Rhinos 4-0 in a game played last Saturday night in Rochester to secure a playoff berth. Former Rhino Tony Donatelli led the way scoring twice and adding an assist as the Battery halted a five-match winless streak. The Battery would need both Rochester and Richmond to drop points this weekend, and a win against Dayton, to have a chance at earning second place and a bye to the USL PRO Playoffs' semifinals.

The Battery defeated Dayton 1-0 in the only pervious meeting between the teams this year in a game played in Dayton back on June 2; midfielder Jose Cuevas scored the lone goal.

Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser should have a full squad to select from with midfielder Navion Boyd returning to fitness and defender Kyle Hoffer back from serving a one-game suspension.

The Battery have two players close to the top of the USL PRO scoring charts heading into the final weekend of the season. Nicki Paterson’s 10 goals leaves him just one goal behind current leading goal-scorer Orlando City’s Dennis Chin and Jose Cuevas’s seven goals leave him four back.

Saturday’s game sponsor is Piggly Wiggly and the first 500 children through the turnstiles will receive a complimentary mini soccer ball. In addition, immediately following the match there will be a spectacular Fireworks display.
