WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads head south this week to face USL PRO’s first-placed team, Orlando City, for their third encounter this season. The Hammerheads and the Lions will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
The Hammerheads have held on to their fourth-place position in the league standings leading up to the playoffs with five games remaining in the regular season. The Hammerheads added three points to their season total following their 2-0 win against Dayton on Friday night at Legion Stadium, allowing them to maintain their unbeaten record at home in USL PRO this season.
The Hammerheads were scheduled to play the Charlotte Eagles this past weekend at Charlotte Christian Stadium, but the game was postponed for a later date due to inadequate field conditions.
When Orlando and Wilmington last played back on June 2 at Legion Stadium, the Hammerheads gave the Lions their first and only loss of the season thus far. The Hammerheads defeated the Lions 3-1, ending their nine-match undefeated streak to start the season. Hammerheads duo Corey Hertzog and Mark Briggs tallied goals and assists to lead the team to a tremendous victory on their home turf in front of both Hammerheads fans and Lions supporters that ventured their way to North Carolina.
Following the game on Wednesday, the Hammerheads are scheduled for a weekend off from any matches until the first weekend in August when they travel to Charleston for the second time to take on the Battery at Blackbaud Stadium on August 3rd. Both the Hammerheads and the Battery will then travel to Wilmington for another match against one another on August 4th at Legion Stadium.
