CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery take on Orlando City on Saturday night at the Florida Citrus Bowl in a game that features the first- and second-place teams in USL PRO. Charleston (7-2-0) enters the match two points behind the first-place Lions (7-1-2) but has played one game less.
The game features the two most potent offenses in USL PRO; Orlando has scored 18 goals in 10 games played while the Battery has managed 16 goals in nine. Orlando forward Dennis Chin leads the way for the Lions with four goals while the Battery’s Nicki Paterson and Jose Cuevas have combined for nine.
This is the first of three games between Orlando and Charleston scheduled for 2012. Orlando will visit Blackbaud Stadium for a match on Thursday, July 19 with the final game scheduled in Orlando on Friday, July 27.
Orlando are the defending USL PRO champions and eliminated the Battery from the 2011 post-season with an overtime quarterfinal victory last August. The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes but Orlando scored twice in the extra 30 minutes to advance to the next round.
In all Charleston and Orlando met five times last season with Charleston winning just once, a 1-0 victory in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium on July 9.
The Battery enter Saturday’s game on the back of three consecutive league wins. This will be Charleston’s fifth road game of the season; Charleston has won all four previous games played away from home.
Orlando has enjoyed a terrific start to the 2012 season and was unbeaten through the first nine matches, but the streak came to an end last Saturday night with a 3-1 loss to the Wilmington Hammerheads. Orlando has yet to lose a game played at the Citrus Bowl.
