WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Wilmington Hammerheads will face Cal FC of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association in the second round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at Legion Stadium. Cal FC faced defending PDL champions, the Kitsap Pumas, in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup on May 15 and advanced to the second round with a 3-1 victory.
Cal FC is coached by former U.S. national team member Eric Wynalda, whom is widely known among soccer fans as scoring the first goal ever in Major League Soccer for the San Jose Clash in 1996 and being the all-time leading goal-scorer for the national team until 2008. Should the Hammerheads win the second round match, they will travel to face Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field on Wednesday, May 30 in the third round.
The Hammerheads have a good history in the Open Cup. Last season, the Hammerheads beat the Central Florida Kraze 4-0 in the first round and then defeated the Charlotte Eagles 3-2 to advance to the third round. The side then traveled to Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah to face Real Salt Lake, where they bowed out after a 2-0 defeat.
“It is important to continue on throughout the U.S. Open Cup,” said Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving. “We’ve reached the quarterfinals in the past and it would be a heck of an achievement as a team and as an organization to surpass that.”
One setback the Wilmington Hammerheads will face in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 22 is the absence of Paul Nicholson. The Hammerheads midfielder will have to serve a suspension from a third yellow card he received in last year’s third round of the U.S. Open Cup during tournament play. He will be eligible to play in the third round if the Hammerheads advance.
