CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Charleston Battery have signed three more players as the club continues to build its roster for the start of the USL PRO season. Veteran midfielder Tony Donatelli joins the Battery after spending the 2011 season with the Rochester Rhinos, midfielder Ryan Richter arrives after a first pro season with MLS’s Philadelphia Union and Cody Ellison joins for his rookie pro season; all three players sign pending USSF approval.
Donatelli began his career with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2006 and was part of the 2006 USL First Division Championship-winning side. After three years in Vancouver, Donatelli was traded to the Montreal Impact where he played two seasons and scored the opening goal of the 2009 USL First Division Championship game, helping the Impact win the championship against his former club.
A native of Glenside, Pa., Donatelli signed with Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes in January 2011 but was waived prior to the start of the MLS season. He subsequently signed with USL PRO club the Rochester Rhinos. Before turning pro the 27-year-old Donatelli, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, played four years at Temple University.
Richter was drafted as the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Philadelphia Union but was subsequently loaned to the Harrisburg City Islanders of USL PRO and made his debut against the Charleston Battery on June 4 in a game Harrisburg won 1-0.
A native of Southampton, Pa. the 22-year-old Richter, 6-2, 175 pounds, attended La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pa.
Defender Cody Ellison joins the Battery for his rookie season after impressing at player trials. A native of Fresno, Calif., Ellison, 6-4, 185 pounds, was a teammate of Battery midfielder Jose Cuevas with the PDL’s Fresno Fuego in 2011.
“In the midfield Tony will add experience and knowledge to our squad which will be crucial throughout the season, while Ryan and Cody will add youthful excitement to our wide attacking and central defending unit” said Battery Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser.
The Charleston Battery will play its final pre-season scrimmage on Thursday afternoon in Cary, N.C. against the Carolina RailHawks.
Charleston Battery home opener – Saturday April 14
The Charleston Battery home opener is set for Saturday, April 14 at Blackbaud Stadium against the Richmond Kickers; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The game is the official kickoff celebration for the Battery’s 20th anniversary season, the team will be wearing special ‘retro ‘93’ jerseys and there will be fireworks immediately following the match.
