WILMINGTON, N.C. – Two former players at UNC-Wilmington, Daniel Roberts and Christian Davidson, have made the transition to the professional ranks and are set to debut with the Wilmington Hammerheads during the 2012 USL PRO season, pending USSF approval. Roberts and Davidson are both 2011 graduates from UNCW where they competed in the Colonial Athletic Association during their four years in college.
Roberts, a midfielder from Sugar Land, Texas started 10 games for the Seahawks in 2011 and earned First-Team All-CAA honors, scoring one goal and producing a team-high five assists. He finished his college career with 14 goals and 18 assists in 65 games, while also playing for the USL PDL's Carolina Dynamo. He was drafted by the Houston Dynamo in the Major League Soccer supplemental draft in January.
In 2010, Roberts scored the game-tying goal against West Virginia, also adding an assist in three appearances before being granted a medical redshirt that allowed him to return this past fall. In 2009, Roberts scored the game-tying goal on a free kick against UNC-Charlotte in an NCAA Tournament First Round victory, scoring a career-high four goals and racking up five assists.
For the Seahawks in 2008, Roberts collectively scored three goals and added two assists. Two of his three goals came in an overtime win against Drexel, including the game-winning goal. During his first season as a Seahawk in 2007, Roberts was named to the CAA All-Rookie squad with three goals and five assists, while also being selected for the Nike/Olitsky Memorial Classic and earning all-tournament honors at the Jameson Inn Classic.
Davidson, a 6-foot-2 defender, also hails from Sugar Land, Texas. In 2010, Davidson started 16 games and assisted on a game-winning goal against Winthrop in the finals of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic. In 2009, he assisted on a game-winner against Northeastern in the CAA finals and led the team with six assists while splitting his playing time between midfield and defense.
In 2008, Davidson played in 19 matches for the Seahawks, including 11 starts. Overall, Davidson appeared in 66 matches as a Seahawk.
Although both Roberts and Davidson come from Sugar Land Texas, prior to being teammates at UNCW they went to different high schools, Roberts at Clements and Davidson at Strake Jesuit. Both players will continue to be teammates throughout the 2012 season – as Hammerheads.
