RICHMOND, VA -- A 2-2 draw keeps Harrisburg winless in Richmond in the last five of the series between the two, but City Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher was pleased with the result on Opening Night of the 2010 USL Second Division season.
“This was a great, hard-fought match. We’ll take the point on the road to kick off our season,” Becher said.
The City Islanders starting lineup included two Philadelphia Union players on loan for this first match as Toni Stahl and Shea Salinas were in action for Harrisburg at the University of Richmond Stadium.
The first goal of the 2010 season was scored by Sheanon Williams in the first half of play, leveling terms for Harrisburg six minutes after Matthew Delicate had given the home side the advantage. Williams, who has played in two youth World Cups for the United States, was a recent signing by Harrisburg upon the reccomendation of Philadelphia’s coaching staff according to a Boston.com (story).
Later in the first half, Brian Ombiji netted the second goal with the assist by Messiah College product Kai Kasiguaran. The 40th-minute strike from one of the goal scorers of the 2007 championship game between the two sides gave Harrisburg the lead.
Tiyi Shipalane, the USL-2 Rookie of the Year last year with the City Islanders, made his first appearance for the Kickers. He was just signed on loan from D. C. United this past week.
The City Islanders return home next Saturday, April 24th for their home opener against the Real Maryland Monarchs at 7:00 pm at Skyline Sports Complex on City Island. Capital BlueCross will provide the first 600 fans with a free t shirt.
