ROCKVILLE, MD -- The Real Maryland Monarchs opened up their second season with a win tonight against the Bermuda Hogges, downing the visitors 3-2.
Real Maryland started strong with an early goal from Sean Rush off a Jeff Carroll free kick in the second minute, which was then followed by a Tom Taylor goal, again off a Jeff Carroll set piece in the 32nd minute.
David Kern, coming off his championship with the Baltimore Blast of the NISL, played like a man possessed in the first half, including a blocked Stephen Astwood penalty kick in the 23rd minute.
Bermuda would not stop fighting as they got on the board right before the halftime whistle with Lashon Dill finding Astwood to cut the deficit in half.
The Monarchs came out in the second half much like they did in the first, pushing the ball forward and creating chances.
Nothing would come of it though until Jamie Holmes scored his first of the season off a Gary Brooks through pass in the 75th minute.
Again, Bermuda made things interesting when Domica Coddington scored in the 76th minute to bring them back within one.
But, a red card to Bermuda goalkeeper Jason Williams ten minutes later would all but lock it up for the Monarchs. When the final whistle blew the final was 3-2.
Real Maryland plays their next game on the road in Pittsburgh against the Riverhounds on Saturday, May 2nd at 7 pm. The Monarchs will be back at Richard Montgomery High School on Saturday, May 9th when they take on in-state rival Crystal Palace Baltimore.
All 2009 Regular Season Home Games will be played at Lester Stadium at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD. For more information, please visit www.realmaryland.us or contact General Manager David Noyes at (301) 933-6460.
