Jeffrey first selected in 2000 Draft
Bay Area Seals select Trinidadian striker Kevin Jeffrey
The new-look Bay Area Seals made Trinidad native Kevin Jeffrey the first selection in the 2000 A-League Draft.

The Seals, who will play under new ownership in 2000, selected the Virginia Commonwealth forward to add scoring punch to an offense that produced just 38 goals in 1999.  The goal-starved team scored just 31 goals in 1998, which was the second-lowest total in the league.

The fourth annual draft, held at the Radisson Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., completed the Umbro Select weekend, which also featured a team of USL All-Stars in an exhibition match and a men's college all-star game that included several players from the Premier Development League Saturday.  Sunday's events included the U.S. Women's National Team squaring off against Norway and the women's college all-star game.

Jeffrey pumped in 29 goals in 38 career games for Virginia Commonwealth and was the Virginia State Player of the Year in '99.  The NSCAA Third Team All-American captained the Rams to a 14-7-1 season and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Brothers Kevin and Brian Alvero were selected as the second and third picks by the Richmond Kickers and Charleston Battery, respectively.  The pair finished their careers at the Univ. of South Florida with a combined total of 39 points in 1999.  Brian, a defender, made three appearances for the Colorado Springs Stampede of the PDL last season.

A total of 38 players selected in the A-League Draft have played in the PDL previously, including 1999 Co-Defender of the Year Mark Schulte and the league's fourth-leading scorer, Leidy Klotz.  The Cincinnati Riverhawks selected Schulte, a Twin Cities Tornado prospect, as their Territorial pick and the Hershey Wildcats made Klotz, who recorded 14 goals and three assists for the Central Jersey Riptide in 1999, the 30th overall selection.

The defending champion Minnesota Thunder selected Marquette Univ. forward Nate Winkel in the first round and Clemson midfielder Jeremy Iwaszkowiec in the second round.  Their Territorial Round selection was midfielder Tamba Johnson.  All three players played for the Twin Cities Tornado last season.
